About this race
The Warriors Run is a famously gruelling mountain-and-road race that starts and finishes at the Cannon Gun on the beachfront in Strandhill, County Sligo, at the foot of Knocknarea. From the village the roughly fifteen-kilometre course heads out on paved roads before its defining challenge: a steep climb of around 700 feet up Knocknarea Mountain, looping around Queen Maeve's Cairn at the summit, then a demanding and often slippery descent back to the coast. About nine kilometres are on tarmac roads, while the central six-kilometre section crosses fields, loose gravel and unsurfaced heather paths, making it part road race and part hill run rather than a standard road event. Tracing its origins to a 1979 pub bet, it is the centrepiece of the Warriors Festival and draws around 1,100 hardy runners each year, rewarding them with spectacular views over Sligo Bay and the surrounding heritage landscape.
