About this race
Mourne SkyTrail is a 20km mountain race that starts and finishes at Donard Park in Newcastle, County Down, taking in the highlights of the eastern Mourne Mountains. The rollercoaster route strikes out towards Hare's Gap before turning back through terrain that overlaps with much of the classic Skyline course, crossing checkpoints at the Donard Col, Hare's Gap and Slieve Commedagh along the way. The course is on technical, rocky mountain trail throughout, with roughly 1,300 metres of ascent, and finishes with a real sting in the tail: the steep 850-metre climb up Slieve Donard, the highest peak in Northern Ireland, before a fast descent back down to the finish. Designed as an accessible entry point into skyrunning, it draws the largest field of the three SkyRun the Mournes distances each year, from first-time mountain racers to competitive club runners.
