About this race

The Breffni 3 Province Challenge Half Marathon is the longest running event in this unique charity challenge based in the village of Arva, County Cavan, with the event headquarters at Market Square in the heart of the village. True to its name, the half marathon route carries runners across the borders of all three provinces, passing through Ulster, Connacht and Leinster on a single course as it winds along the quiet country roads where Cavan, Leitrim and Longford meet. Run on rolling, rural terrain through scenic drumlin countryside, it offers a genuine endurance test in a peaceful border setting away from traffic. Now well established as a popular fixture each August, the event raises funds for cancer charities and draws a warm, supportive crowd. Bespoke medals and t-shirts add to the appeal, with a friendly community atmosphere throughout the day in Arva.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.

Loop Course type
2m limit 21.1m Start/finish drop
Negligible limit 10.5km Start/finish separation
