About this race
Mourne SkyUltra is a 50km mountain race that starts and finishes at Donard Park in Newcastle, County Down, and takes in a grand tour of the Mourne Mountains. Runners head out through Donard Forest before following the line of the Mourne Wall up Slieve Donard early in the race. From there the route drops and stays relatively low to reach the first aid station at Carrick Cottage, before linking the summits of Slieve Binnian above Silent Valley. After a second aid station at Fofanny Dam, the course joins the classic Skyline route heading east, climbing Slieve Commedagh's south-west top before a final descent back to Donard Park. The terrain throughout is genuinely mountainous, on technical and rocky trail paths with sustained climbing and descending and around 3,500 metres of ascent in total, making this the toughest and longest of the three SkyRun the Mournes distances.
