About this race
The Boston Scientific Block Run 5K takes place entirely on the grounds of the Boston Scientific site in Ballybrit, Galway, close to Galway Racecourse. The course is a flat, fast 1km loop around the perimeter of Boston Scientific Building 1, run on the estate's internal roads, with runners completing five laps to make up the 5km distance. Because the loop is short, flat and closed to traffic, it is well suited to runners chasing a personal best. The race starts and finishes at the Boston Scientific site, alongside a linked walking event that heads out onto the historic Galway Racecourse at Ballybrit. Runners of all abilities are welcome, and the event doubles as a family day out, with a fundraising raffle and refreshments served afterwards, with all proceeds supporting the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
