About this race
The Run Galway Bay Marathon starts and finishes at the historic Nimmo's Pier in the Claddagh, serving as the centerpiece of this coastal festival of running. The multi-lap course leads participants along the closed roads of Salthill and the famous promenade, passing through the heart of the village and out towards Blackrock. Runners will experience a completely flat and fast asphalt terrain, perfect for maintaining a steady pace while enjoying views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Clare mountains. This scenic route through local landmarks offers a high-energy, spectator-friendly atmosphere as participants complete the loops to reach the finish line.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
