About this race

The Bere Island 5 Mile Road Race starts and finishes in Rerrin Village, on the eastern side of Bere Island in Bantry Bay, County Cork. Runners take the "high road" out of the village first, climbing to give stunning views across Bantry Bay towards Sheep's Head, before dropping back down on reaching the townland of Ballinakilla. From there the course follows the "low road", offering fantastic views over Berehaven Harbour, before continuing through the townland of Ardagh and back to the finish line in Rerrin. The route is entirely on the island's quiet public roads, undulating throughout rather than flat, reflecting the natural terrain of this dramatic offshore island. As Bere Island is only accessible by ferry from Castletownbere, the event has a genuinely unique, remote character. Part of the Beara AC 5 Mile Race Series alongside Allihies, Eyeries and Glengarriff, it's a scenic highlight of the West Cork autumn running calendar.
