About this race
The Leenane 5 Mile Run starts and finishes in Leenane Village, on the shores of Killary Harbour, Ireland's only fjord, on the Galway-Mayo border. The route follows the road along the harbour, taking in dramatic views of the water framed by the surrounding Connemara and Mayo mountains. A highlight of the course is the "Golden Mile" through Glanagimla, an award-winning stretch of road recognised for its scenery. The course is run entirely on tarmac, with rolling terrain reflecting the natural contours of the fjord-side road rather than a flat profile. Organised by the Leenane/Maam branch of the Irish Red Cross, the event welcomes serious runners and joggers alongside walkers and families, with prizes for the top three men and women. All proceeds go towards the local Cardiac First Responder Group, and the day finishes with tea, cakes and a warm village welcome back at the community hall.
