About this race
The Waterside Half Marathon is the longest-running race in the Northern Ireland athletics calendar, first held in 1984 and now in its 43rd year. Organised by Derry City and Strabane District Council in partnership with City of Derry Spartans, the 2026 event is designated as the NI and Ulster Half Marathon Road Race Championship. The chip-timed course starts and finishes at Ebrington Square on the Waterside, crossing the River Foyle to the cityside and passing through parks, greenways and over the city's iconic bridges before returning to the finish. The route is described as undulating and urban, showcasing the historic walled city and its riverside setting. A relay option for teams of three is also available alongside the solo half marathon.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
