About this race

The Portaferry Gala 10 Mile Road Race takes place on the Ards Peninsula in County Down, organised by East Down Athletic Club and NICS Athletics Club in conjunction with the Portaferry Gala Committee. The race starts at the Sports Centre on the Cloughy Road and heads through Demense View onto the Coach Road, down Church Street past the town square and onto the Shore Road, turning out along the coast onto the Bar Hall Road, Ballyquitin Road, Quintin Bay Road, Craigarodden Road and Ballyblack Road, before returning along the Ballyphilip Road and Coach Road to finish in the town square. The course mixes good flat coastal stretches with a number of hills of varying length, making for a genuinely testing 10 miles. A 2 x 5 mile relay for pairs runs alongside the main race, and the event forms one of the highlights of Portaferry Gala Week.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
