About this race

The Coney Island Adventure Run is a unique 10 mile road and strand race organised by Sligo Rugby Club. Starting and finishing at Sligo Rugby Club in Strandhill, the course heads out along quiet country roads before reaching the tidal crossing at Cummeen Strand, where runners traverse approximately 2.5 kilometres of sand and causeway to reach Coney Island. After turning at a timing mat on the island, competitors race back across the strand and return via the same roads to the finish line at the rugby club. The terrain is mixed, combining tarmac road miles with the more rugged underfoot conditions of the tidal crossing, which is only passable at low tide. This makes timing critical not only for a fast finish but for safe completion of the course. The event doubles as a fundraiser for youth development at Sligo Rugby Club.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
