About this race

The Athgarvan GAA & LGFA Community Fun Run 5k starts and finishes at Scoil Bhríde National School in Athgarvan, next to the local GAA grounds in County Kildare. Like the longer race, it heads out onto the open, rolling plains of the Curragh, following quiet country roads across this famous tract of grassland close to the Royal Curragh Golf Club, with wide views over the surrounding common land. The shorter distance suits first-timers, families and those who prefer to run, jog or walk, though the gently undulating Curragh terrain still offers a bit of honest effort. Every finisher collects a medal, with water, bananas and refreshments waiting back at the school hall. The event also features a 10k and a Kids 1K, so the whole family can take part. Hosted by the club, it is a friendly, community-spirited morning out on the plains.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
