About this race
The Rare to Real 5K starts and finishes at Rathcoffey GAA in County Kildare, as part of a special one-time road race in support of the Irish Cancer Society and Breakthrough Cancer Research. The event was founded by Gavin Reilly following his own cancer diagnosis and journey through treatment and recovery, turning a difficult personal experience into a positive community initiative. The route follows the public roads around Rathcoffey, with the 5K running alongside the longer 10K distance on the same morning. Open to participants of all abilities, the event welcomes competitive runners, casual joggers and those simply taking part to support the cause and raise awareness for cancer research and services. As a community-driven fundraiser rather than a large commercial race, it carries a strong personal and local significance, bringing people together in County Kildare for a meaningful shared cause.
