About this race
The Ireland West 5k is the shortest distance at the award-winning event hosted by Swinford Athletic Club in County Mayo, held alongside the rare ¾ marathon and the 10k. Race registration and headquarters are based at Swinford Community Centre, just off the N5, with the course set in the fast, scenic East Mayo countryside. Run on quiet rural roads through gentle, low-lying farmland, the route offers an accessible introduction to the area's peaceful landscape and shares the picturesque setting for which the event is known. Relatively flat and fast, the 5k suits beginners, families, walkers and younger participants, as well as club runners looking for a brisk effort. Chip-timed and well marshalled, the event provides cash prizes, trophies and a finisher's medal, all rounded off with a warm West of Ireland welcome and after-race hospitality at headquarters.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
