About this race

The Greenway Half Marathon is a scenic point-to-point race run along the Waterford Greenway, the off-road former Waterford to Dungarvan railway line in County Waterford. The 13.1 mile course starts at the Coachhouse in Kilmacthomas and finishes near Ballinroad on the edge of Dungarvan, with entrants bused from the finish to the start. It is regarded as one of the flattest half marathons in the country, running gently downhill with a net drop in elevation, and crosses spectacular viaducts with views of the Comeragh Mountains and surrounding farmland. As the greenway remains a shared space open to walkers and cyclists, the field is capped and runners keep left along the smooth former railway trackbed. Organised by West Waterford Athletic Club in conjunction with Waterford City and County Council, the chip-timed event raises funds for charity and offers a fast, picturesque course with a commemorative medal for finishers.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.

Point-to-point Course type
86m limit 21.1m Start/finish drop
17.26km limit 10.5km Start/finish separation
✗ Doesn't meet the course-profile criteria — net drop exceeds the World Athletics limit — start and finish are too far apart relative to race distance.
