About this race

The Flying 5 5-Mile follows a unique and scenic route that includes a section of the Wild Atlantic Way and a run directly on the Bantry Airstrip. The entirely paved path travels along the Sheep’s Head and Rooska loop, offering breathtaking coastal views as it hugs the water's edge. This course is characterized by its dramatic seaside setting and the rare opportunity to race on a coastal landing strip. While the area features some undulations common to the West Cork landscape, the airstrip section provides a flat, fast surface for a sprint finish. The loop concludes with a final stretch that brings runners back toward the starting area with expansive views of the bay.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
