About this race

The Castlepollard 5k, also known as the Tullynally Challenge, starts in the village of Castlepollard in north County Westmeath, beginning around the village square. The route loops out through the scenic parkland grounds of Tullynally Castle, granted by the Pakenham family, before returning toward the village, with a fast downhill finish back into the town near the fire station on Pakenhamhall Road. The course is on tarmac roads and is widely regarded as flat and fast, drawing runners, joggers and walkers from across the midlands, Dublin, Meath and surrounding counties. Established in 2002 and organised by North Westmeath Athletic Club, this long-running summer evening event is chip timed and a highlight of the midlands calendar. The picturesque castle grounds add greatly to the atmosphere, and all finishers receive a bespoke Tullynally Castle medal in a warm community setting.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
