About this race
The Waterford Viking Marathon begins in the heart of the historic city on The Mall, positioned between the House of Waterford Crystal and the Bishop's Palace. Runners navigate a scenic route across the iconic Rice Bridge and the Thomas Francis Meagher Bridge before transitioning onto the tranquil Waterford Greenway. The course journeys through the world-renowned Mount Congreve Gardens, offering breathtaking views of the River Suir and the lush Irish countryside. While the initial sections feature gentle rolling hills, the latter half is celebrated for its fast, downhill stretches leading back toward the vibrant city center. The race concludes with a grand finish on O'Connell Street, surrounded by the infectious energy and 1,100 years of heritage in Ireland’s oldest city.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
