About this race

The Great Erris Run 5k starts and finishes at the Broadhaven Bay Hotel in Belmullet, on the wild Erris peninsula of north Mayo, sharing the same coastal setting as the accompanying 10k. The route runs as a flat loop along the surrounding roads, offering stunning views of Broadhaven and Blacksod bays against the dramatic backdrop of the north Mayo coastline. The flat terrain makes it especially welcoming for novices, walkers and families, and the distance suits participants of all abilities. Sanctioned and measured by Athletics Ireland, the chip-timed event began as part of Belmullet's bicentenary celebrations and now takes place each year during the town's festival week. Organised by M Fitness in memory of the late Pauline Sweeney, it raises funds for MS Ireland. Runners are encouraged to finish with a refreshing dip in the nearby Belmullet Tidal Pool.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
