About this race

The Bob Heffernan and Mary Hanley 5k is widely regarded as one of Ireland's fastest and flattest road races, consistently attracting a high-quality field of athletes. The single-loop course starts approximately one mile outside the village of Johnstownbridge and travels along smooth, sheltered country roads with only two significant left-hand turns. This tarmac route offers a perfect profile for chasing a personal best, navigating the scenic rural borders of Kildare and Meath before returning to the village center.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.

Point-to-point Course type
9m limit 5.0m Start/finish drop
1.81km limit 2.5km Start/finish separation
✗ Doesn't meet the course-profile criteria — net drop exceeds the World Athletics limit.
