About this race
The Run Ballybunion 5k begins and ends on Main Street in the heart of the town, with the event hub typically centered near Kilcooly's Country House Hotel. This scenic road course guides participants along the rugged Wild Atlantic Way, offering spectacular vistas of the North Kerry coastline and its dramatic cliffside scenery. Runners enjoy a route that captures the vibrant seaside atmosphere of the village before heading out into the picturesque local landscape. The terrain is run entirely on permanent road surfaces, providing a firm and reliable foundation for the duration of the race. While the views are breathtaking, the course is characterized by challenging hills interspersed along the way, making it a spirited and rewarding test for all fitness levels. Additionally, there is a separate kids' fun run held earlier in the day to ensure a full family-friendly experience.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
