About this race

The Kilclief Ben Dearg Coastal Run 5k is a scenic road race on the shores of Strangford Lough in County Down, organised by Kilclief Ben Dearg GAC. Race headquarters are at the club rooms in Kilclief. The 5k course follows the coastal road south from the vicinity of Kilclief, passing through one of the most picturesque stretches of the County Down coastline, with views across the waters of Strangford Lough and towards Ballyhornan. The terrain is largely flat in County Down terms, running on quiet tarmac roads through the Lecale Peninsula. The surrounding landscape is rich in history, with Kilclief Castle and the Killard Nature Reserve among the notable landmarks in the area. The event starts at 10:30am and takes place on 12 July 2026 under an Athletics Northern Ireland permit. It forms part of the club's annual community fundraising programme.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.

Out-and-back Course type
0m limit 5.0m Start/finish drop
Negligible limit 2.5km Start/finish separation
