About this race

The Loughrea Grey Lake 10k Road Race is organised by Loughrea Athletic Club and takes place annually in late September in the market town of Loughrea, County Galway. Race headquarters are at the Temperance Hall, Barrack Street, Loughrea. The course starts near the Tennis Club Grounds on the shore of Lough Rea, the ancient lake from which the town takes its name, and takes in a circuit of the lake before finishing at St Brendan's Cathedral in the town centre. The course includes a notable climb from around 1.5km to 5km before descending back toward the town. Named after the grey-green waters of Lough Rea, the event is chip timed, AAI approved, and includes a junior fun run for younger participants. A limited-edition t-shirt is available to early entrants.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
