About this race

The Fr Michael Kelliher 4 Mile Kilgobnet Road Race is held annually in Kilgobnet, Beaufort, near Killarney in County Kerry, organised by Star of the Laune AC. The race is run for the Fr Michael Kelliher Memorial Cup and proceeds go to the Tir na nÓg orphanage in Tanzania, giving the event a strong charitable dimension. The course follows a four-mile route on the quiet roads around Kilgobnet and the Beaufort area, set in the shadow of MacGillycuddy's Reeks in one of the most scenic corners of Kerry. The surrounding mountain landscape and lush valley terrain give the race a distinctive atmosphere, and the course is run entirely on tarmac on open rural roads. Organised by Star of the Laune AC and held under AAI permit, the event is chip timed and welcomes runners of all abilities. Prizes are awarded to the top three male and female finishers across senior and age category grades, with a souvenir medal for all who complete the four miles.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
