About this race
The Colm Horkan Memorial Run 5k is part of the 6th annual event in Charlestown, County Mayo, organised by East Mayo AC and the Special Olympics Club in memory of Detective Garda Colm Horkan, a Charlestown native and club member killed in the line of duty in 2020. Runners assemble on Church Street and the course takes in the roads of Charlestown and the surrounding east Mayo area on a route that is consistently described as flat and fast, making it well-suited for personal best attempts. The event is chip timed and run under an Athletics Ireland permit. Post-race refreshments and prize-giving take place at the CBD Complex at Charlestown GAA Club.
Course profile & record eligibility
World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.
