About this race

The Boyle AC 5k Road Race is a chip-timed, Athletics Ireland permitted road race organised by Boyle Athletic Club in the town of Boyle, County Roscommon. The race starts at the historic Boyle Abbey, a Cistercian monastery dating to around 1160 and one of the finest examples of Romanesque and early Gothic architecture in Ireland. From the abbey, the course follows a fast, flat route along the scenic Boyle Canal, utilising a looped section before finishing at Woodenbridge Road adjoining the canal. The course is specifically designed for personal best attempts, with organisers describing the elevation as essentially zero. The evening race is set for 8pm in July and draws a strong field from across Connacht and beyond. Cash prizes are awarded to overall and age category winners across male and female categories. The event is sponsored by Rock Civil Engineering.

Course profile & record eligibility

World Athletics record-eligibility rules cap net elevation loss at 1m per km of race distance, and require the start and finish to be no more than 50% of the race distance apart — both meant to stop a course gaining an unfair edge from downhill grade or a point-to-point tailwind. This is based on this course's recorded elevation and GPS data, not an official measurement or certification.

Point-to-point Course type
8m limit 5.0m Start/finish drop
0.93km limit 2.5km Start/finish separation
✗ Doesn't meet the course-profile criteria — net drop exceeds the World Athletics limit.
